Should You Send a Resume as a PDF or Word Document?
Choose between PDF and Word for a job application, protect your layout, and follow the employer’s file-format instructions.

The right resume file format depends on the employer’s instructions and the application system. A readable document is more important than a universal rule.
When PDF is best
Use PDF when the employer does not request another format and you want the layout, spacing, and fonts to stay consistent. Open the exported file before sending it and check that text can be selected.
When Word is safer
Use DOCX when the application explicitly requests Word, when a recruiter needs to edit your document, or when an older system has trouble reading PDFs. Keep a clean DOCX version ready.
File-name checklist
Use a professional name such as Priya-Sharma-Resume.pdf. Avoid names like final-final2, symbols, or a file that only says resume. Do not upload a scanned image unless requested. Follow the employer’s instructions first, then use the format that preserves a clean, searchable document.
